Your assessment sounds accurate to me. I'd heard (though cannot confirm) Mayfield cannot drive a loose car very well, and not many CC's can excel at setting one up tight. Hey, they could have said "Penske and Evernham were right, the guy's got issues!"
The better solution for them-- and remember, I like Mayfield-- is to get someone in the 70 who can run a similar package to Riggs. There just weren't a lot of times this year both cars were good, and the 70 was consistently the weaker of the two.
